Retreat Hotel is 96 rooms on a headland where the swell wraps into a point break you can read from bed. Downstairs there are four kitchens and a shaping bay. Up on the courtyard level there is The Green Room — a licensed gaming floor for guests 18 and over, kept deliberately small.
Marlin Point
A surf hotel that happens to have a card room.
The building started as a fish cannery and spent eleven years empty before anyone thought to put beds in it. It opened as a hotel in 2014 with forty rooms and one kitchen. The shaping bay came in 2017, because guests kept dinging boards and there was nowhere within an hour to fix them. The Green Room was licensed and opened in 2019.
The order matters. This is not a casino with rooms attached. It is a surf hotel with a small, well-run gaming floor on the courtyard level, and everything is priced so that you never have to walk through one to get to the other.
What ties it together is the hour. The kitchen that plates the tasting menu at eight also fries eggs at half past four for the dawn patrol, and pours coffee for whoever is still at a table.

Stay
Six categories, sand level to roof
Rates are per room per night with breakfast for two, before local tax. These are low-season starting prices — the rate that applies to your dates is confirmed when you book.
Sandbar Room
A quiet room on the courtyard side with a king bed, a rinse shower off the corridor and shutters that actually black out.
Trade Wind Room
Faces the bay with a deep balcony wide enough to stand a board against. You can call the tide from the bed.
Point Room
The corner rooms in the north wing, looking straight down the line of the point. First to sell out on a good forecast.
Reef Suite
A separate sitting room, a bath rather than a shower, and a terrace that gets the last of the light off the water.
Cannery Suite
Two bedrooms in the old machine hall, with the original roof trusses left where they were and a table for six.
The Shaping Loft
The whole roof of the south wing: three bedrooms, a plunge pool, an outdoor shower and a board rack of your own.

Thirty-one steps to the sand
We counted. The point works on anything over three feet with a south in it, the beach break in front of the hotel is where lessons happen, and the reef at the far end of the bay is for people who already know what they are doing. Guides go out at first light and again on the afternoon push.

Sandbar Room
The simplest room we have and the one we would book ourselves for two nights. King or twin, a writing shelf under the window, blackout shutters, and a courtyard outlook that stays cool through the afternoon. Shared rinse-off point at the end of the corridor.
Trade Wind Room
Six extra square metres, a proper balcony and an outlook across the bay. The balcony is deliberately deep enough to stand two boards against the wall without blocking the door, and there is a hook rail for wetsuits that drains outside rather than onto the floor.
Point Room
The corner rooms, angled so the window frames the whole length of the point. If you want to check it without getting up, this is the room. Bath and separate shower, a long desk, and the best light in the building between six and eight in the morning.
Reef Suite
A separate sitting room with a sofa that makes up as a third bed, a deep bath under a window, and a terrace on the western corner that gets the last hour of light. Sleeps two comfortably and three without anyone resenting it.
Cannery Suite
Built into the old machine hall with the roof trusses and the travelling crane rail left exactly where they were. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a table that seats six, and a kitchenette that is honestly more of a bar. Popular with two couples travelling together.
The Shaping Loft
The entire roof of the south wing. Three bedrooms, a plunge pool, an outdoor shower, a private board rack and a host on call for the length of the stay. Named for the shaping bay that was up here before the roof was rebuilt in 2017.
What is in the rate, and what is not
Every rate includes breakfast for two, Wi-Fi, the rinse tanks and wax bench, the lap pool, and one board from the house rack per guest per day. Rates exclude local tourist tax, which is charged per adult per night and collected at checkout. There is no resort fee and no charge for parking. Board bags travel free on our airport transfer.

The practical answers
Check-in and out
Check-in from 14:00, out by 11:00. If there is swell on your departure morning we will hold your bags and give you the staff shower — just ask, it is not a paid upgrade.
Children
Welcome everywhere in the hotel except The Green Room, which is strictly 18 and over. Cots are free. Extra beds are $40 a night. The surf school takes children from age seven.
Accessibility
Six rooms are adapted for step-free access with roll-in showers. The lobby, all four kitchens, the pool and The Green Room are step-free. The sand steps are not, and there is no ramp to the beach.
Cancellation
Flexible rates cancel free until 48 hours before arrival. Advance-purchase and package rates are non-refundable, and we say so clearly before you confirm rather than in a footnote.
Boards and bags
Free storage in a locked, racked room by the beach door. Bring your own quiver or use ours. We do not charge for board carriage on the transfer, unlike the airline.
Wetsuits
Rinse tanks and a drying room with forced air by the beach entrance. Suits do not go in guest bathrooms — there is nowhere for the water to go and it ruins the room for whoever is next.
Pets
Dogs are welcome in the south wing and on the courtyard terrace at $25 a night, but not in the kitchens, the pool area or The Green Room. Tell us at booking so we put you on the right corridor.
Groups
We take groups up to twenty-four in a whole-wing arrangement. Stag and hen bookings are declined — it is not snobbery, it is that the building is small and the walls are thin.

South Reef is closed to guests without a guide, at any level, at any size. That is a house rule and it is not negotiable.
What we run
Sessions, lessons and the rack
Guided sessions
Two a day, every day: first light and the afternoon push. A guide reads the tide and the wind the night before, picks the break, and posts it on the board by the beach door. Groups cap at six. No charge, no sign-up sheet, just be at the door.
Learn to surf
Small-group lessons on The Inside for absolute beginners, from age seven up. Soft-tops, impact vests, and instructors who stay in the water with you rather than shouting from the sand. Four to a group, two groups a day.
Private coaching
One to one, with video shot from the beach and reviewed over lunch. Most useful if you have been surfing for a few years and have stopped getting better, which is a more common problem than not being able to stand up.
The rack
One board per guest per day is included. Soft-tops, mid-lengths, fish, a few step-ups for when it gets serious, and eight logs. Beyond the daily allowance it is $30 a day. Wetsuits, from 2 mm shorties to 4/3s, are $15.
Shaping bay & repairs
A working bay behind the board room with a resident shaper four days a week. Dings dropped before six are back on the rack by breakfast. Full custom boards can be ordered and shipped, or shaped over a longer stay if you want to watch it happen.
Boat trips & further afield
When the bay is flat we run the skiff to two reef setups forty minutes up the coast. Also free-diving, a decent longboard-only day trip, and the drive inland to the river mouth that only works twice a winter.
Water safety
The rules we do not bend
- Guides have the final word on whether a session runs and on who goes where. They are not being cautious for the hotel's benefit.
- South Reef requires a guide. Always. There is coral eighteen inches under the surface at the take-off.
- No alcohol before a session. Our guides will turn people away and have.
- Leashes are checked at the door on rental boards. If yours is frayed, swap it — we will not charge you.
- The lifeguard tower is staffed 07:00 to 18:00 in season. Outside those hours the beach is unpatrolled and you swim at your own risk.
- Rip channel runs off the northern rocks on a falling tide. It is marked, and it is the fastest way out to the point if you know how to use it.
The floor
Two rooms, kept apart on purpose
Tables are in the east room, under the old cannery clerestory, and run from four in the afternoon until the last hand. Machines are in the west room behind a proper wall, because a slot floor and a blackjack pit want completely different noise levels and most casinos pretend otherwise.
Above both there are two private salons reached by their own lift from the suite floors, so nobody has to cross the public room to get to them or to leave.
Every dealer here came through our own training before taking a table. Limits are posted at each pit in local currency before you sit down, and the printed house rules for every game are at the desk in English and in the local language.

Before you come up
House rules, short version
18 and over
Photo ID is checked at the door on every visit, however many nights running you have been in. If your age is in doubt you will be challenged, no matter how busy the room is or who you are with.
Dress
Smart casual. This is a surf hotel, so nobody is going to ask for a jacket — but no swimwear, no bare feet, no wetsuits, and a shirt with sleeves after eight in the salons.
Phones and cameras
Calls in the corridor, not at the table. No photography or filming anywhere on the floor. That is a condition of our licence rather than a house preference, so there is no discretion in it.
Cash desk
One desk, in the east room, open whenever the floor is. Above a set threshold we are required to record identity and source of funds — that is anti-money-laundering law, and it applies to everyone.
Nothing is comped
No room rate, package or offer here includes gaming credit, and no offer requires a visit to the floor. If a package looks like it does, it is a mistake and we want to know.

The salons
Two private rooms, upper floor
Access is by invitation or by qualifying play. Each salon has its own dealing team, its own service and its own lift to the suite floors. Limits are set individually with the floor manager.
Membership adds a named host for the length of a stay, priority at Kelp and Driftwood, and airport transfer arrangements. It does not add gaming credit, a loss rebate, or any inducement to play more than you planned to.
Dawn Patrol
A counter by the beach door that never closes. It exists because two groups of people need feeding at hours no restaurant keeps: surfers going out at half four, and whoever is coming off the floor at the same time. Eggs, rice bowls, congee, a good sandwich, and coffee that is made rather than pumped.
Driftwood
The main room and the terrace, running from first breakfast to last dinner around a wood-fired grill and a raw counter fed by the day boats. The terrace stays open unless the wind makes it silly. Long tables, plates in the middle, nobody minds sand.
Kelp
Eighteen seats and one menu a night, built entirely around what came off the boats that morning and what is growing on the terraces behind the hotel. Bookings open forty-five days out and the room is usually gone inside a fortnight. Residents get a three-day head start.
The Glasshouse Bar
The old cannery office with the glazing put back in. Rum from the region, a short and serious cocktail list, cold beer for people still in board shorts, and small plates until one. Records rather than a playlist, and a piano at weekends that somebody usually plays badly.
Reservations
How to get a table
Driftwood and The Glasshouse take walk-ins and hold a proportion of tables back at every service for people staying in the hotel. Dawn Patrol takes no bookings at any hour because it does not need to.
Kelp opens bookings forty-five days ahead and residents get a window three days before public release. If you are staying with us and Kelp is full, tell the desk anyway — cancellations are common and we keep a real list rather than a polite one.
Dietary requirements are handled properly rather than apologetically, including on the Kelp menu. Tell us at the time of booking and the kitchen builds around it rather than removing things from a plate.
The Swell Week
Five nights in a Trade Wind Room with breakfast, both guided sessions every day, unlimited boards from the rack, one private coaching half-day with video, and a free ding repair if you need one. Priced to be the obvious choice if you came here to surf and nothing else.
First Time Standing Up
Four nights in a Sandbar Room, breakfast, four two-hour lessons on The Inside, a soft-top and a wetsuit for the duration, and a dinner at Driftwood on the last night whether or not you managed it. Takes complete beginners, from age seven.
The Long Weekend
Three nights in a Reef Suite with breakfast, one dinner at Kelp with the pairing, a half-day on the skiff to the reefs up the coast with lunch aboard, and a two o'clock checkout on the last day.
Flat Spell
What to do when the forecast collapses. Two nights in any room at 35% off, breakfast, a cellar tasting at The Glasshouse, and the inland day trip to the waterfalls with a driver. Bookable inside seven days of arrival, subject to the forecast actually being flat.
The small print, said plainly
Packages need the minimum stay shown, are subject to availability, cannot be combined with each other or with a corporate rate, and exclude local tourist tax. Package rates are non-refundable inside fourteen days of arrival. No package includes gaming credit, a loss rebate, or any benefit contingent on visiting The Green Room, and none ever will.
How it came about
It was a cannery, and then it was empty
The building processed fish for forty years and then stopped, and sat empty for eleven more. It was bought in 2011 for the land, and the plan was to knock it down. That changed when somebody spent a night in it and watched the point break at first light through a hole in the wall where the loading door had been.
It opened as a hotel in 2014 with forty rooms and one kitchen. The north wing followed in 2016. The shaping bay went in the year after, because guests kept dinging boards and the nearest repair was an hour up the coast. The Green Room was licensed and opened in 2019, five years after the hotel.
Nothing has been demolished since. Every phase worked around what was already there, which is why the corridors do not run straight, the floors are all slightly different heights, and the oldest rooms have the best windows.

Governance
Compliance, finance and player protection report to a board that includes two independent non-executive directors with no operational role on the gaming floor. The floor, the cash desk and our player protection procedures are audited on the cycle our licence requires, and those reports reach the board unedited.
People
The hotel employs around 210 people directly across rooms, kitchens, the surf club, engineering and The Green Room. Every dealer is trained and certified through our own programme before taking a table. Every member of floor and front-of-house staff completes player protection training when they join and again each year. Every surf guide holds a current water rescue and first aid certificate, checked annually rather than on joining.
How we handle the two halves
The hotel and the gaming floor are run as separate operations that happen to share a building and a kitchen. No room rate is subsidised by gaming. No package is contingent on play. Surf guides are not incentivised to mention the floor and hosts are not incentivised to mention the surf. If those two things ever stop being true, this page will say so.

Our approach
Everyone who works The Green Room — dealers, hosts, cash desk, security — completes player protection training when they join and again every year. Floor staff are trained to notice when an evening has stopped being an evening, and they are authorised to bring in the player protection officer quietly, without you having to raise it first.
Nothing about how this hotel is priced or packaged depends on anyone gambling. No room rate, package or offer includes gaming credit, and none of them requires a visit to the floor. Our surf guides and front-of-house staff receive no incentive of any kind connected to the gaming floor.
What you can put in place
- Loss and time limits. Set a ceiling for a session, a day or a whole stay with any host. When it is reached, play stops until the period resets. We do not ask you to justify the number.
- Time-out. A temporary break from the floor, from 24 hours up to six months. Entry is declined at the door for the duration. It does not affect your room, your meals or the surf club.
- Self-exclusion. A longer-term or permanent exclusion, processed within 24 hours. It cannot be reversed by you alone during the exclusion period — that is the point of it.
- Someone else's concern. A family member can ask us to look at a person's play. The player protection officer handles it in confidence and will tell you what we can and cannot do.
What to watch for
Gambling turns harmful when it starts reaching money, relationships, work, sleep or health. The usual signals are spending more time or money than you intended, going back specifically to win losses back, borrowing to fund play, hiding what has gone, and feeling preoccupied or anxious between visits. If any of that is familiar — for you or for someone close to you — speak to any host and ask for the player protection officer.
Independent support
Support that has nothing to do with us is usually the more useful kind. Most countries run a free, confidential national gambling helpline, and Gamblers Anonymous holds meetings in most of them; Gam-Anon supports family members. Helpline numbers change, so rather than printing one that may not connect, search for the current national gambling support service where you live, or ask at our reception — we hold the current list and will dial it for you if you would rather not.
Before you publish: replace the paragraph above with the specific national helpline for your jurisdiction. Most gaming licences require a named helpline and a specific form of words, and the regulator will tell you exactly what it must say.
Age
Entry to The Green Room is restricted to people aged 18 and over, and photo identification is checked at the door on every visit without exception. Where local law sets a higher age or additional rules for residents, those apply and are enforced at the door. Anyone whose age is in doubt will be challenged regardless of how busy the room is.
Advertising
We do not advertise gaming to anyone under the legal age, do not use imagery or language aimed at children, and do not present gambling as a way out of financial difficulty or as a measure of anyone's worth. We do not advertise the floor at all outside this website and the property itself.

2. What we collect
- Identity. Name, date of birth and government photo identification, which gaming law requires us to check before admitting anyone to The Green Room, and which hotel law requires at check-in.

- Reservation. Room, dining, lesson and event bookings, stay preferences and any dietary requirements you tell us about.
- Health, where you offer it. Medical conditions relevant to safety in the water, given voluntarily on the surf waiver. We use it for that and nothing else.
- Payment. Card details tokenised by our payment provider. We do not store full card numbers. Where law requires it, source-of-funds information for higher-value play.
- Play data. Table and machine activity, where relevant to limits you have set, salon access or player protection monitoring.
- CCTV and access control. On the gaming floor, at entrances and in public areas, as our licence requires.
- Technical. IP address, browser and device information when you use this website.
3. Why we process it
To verify age and identity; to fulfil room, dining, surf and event bookings; to run the water-safety programme; to meet obligations under gaming, anti-money-laundering, hospitality and tax law; to monitor for signs of gambling harm; to keep the property secure; and to answer your enquiries. Where we rely on your consent — marketing, for instance — you can withdraw it at any time without affecting anything that happened before.
4. Legal bases
Performance of a contract (your booking); compliance with a legal obligation (identity checks, anti-money-laundering, CCTV retention, guest registration); our legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, improving the place); your explicit consent (marketing, and any health information on the surf waiver); and, in an emergency, protection of vital interests.
5. How long we keep it
- Identity and financial records connected to gaming: as gaming and anti-money-laundering law requires, generally five years from the transaction.
- CCTV from the gaming floor: 90 days, unless a specific investigation needs it longer.
- Reservation and stay records: six years, for tax and contractual purposes.
- Surf waivers and incident reports: three years, or longer where an incident is unresolved.
- Marketing data: until you withdraw consent, or three years without engagement.
- Website technical logs: 30 to 90 days.
6. Who we share it with
Our gaming regulator, tax authorities and other competent authorities where the law requires it; payment processors, identity verification providers, booking channels you chose to use, and IT and hosting suppliers acting on our written instructions under data processing agreements. We do not sell personal data and we do not share it with data brokers.
7. Transfers abroad
Where a supplier sits outside [COUNTRY / ECONOMIC AREA] we put an appropriate safeguard in place first, normally standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose.
8. Your rights
You can ask for access to your data, correction of anything wrong, erasure where no legal obligation requires us to keep it, restriction of or objection to certain processing, and a portable copy of what you gave us. 1. What cookies are
Cookies are small files a website stores on your device. Local storage, pixels and similar technologies do comparable jobs and are covered here too. They let a site work, remember what you chose, and show us how it is being used.
2. The categories
- Essential. Needed for the site to function and to remember your age confirmation and your cookie choices. These cannot be switched off, because without them we have no way to honour the choices you make.
- Analytics. Set only if you allow them. They show us which pages get read and where people give up, so we can fix what is slow or unclear. They are not used to identify you.
- Marketing. Set only if you allow them. They make advertising elsewhere more relevant to you. Reject this category and no marketing storage is set at all.
3. What this site sets today
As it ships, this website writes two essential items to your browser's local storage: one recording that you confirmed your age, and one recording your cookie choices. Nothing else is stored unless you accept analytics or marketing, and no third-party advertising network is loaded by default.
Typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts. That sets no cookie, but your IP address is visible to Google as part of the request. The fonts can be self-hosted if you would rather they were not.
4. Changing your mind
Clearing this site's stored data in your browser removes both saved preferences and brings the age confirmation and the cookie banner back on your next visit. Most browsers also let you block storage entirely under privacy or site settings, though parts of the site will then behave oddly.
5. Third-party cookies
Where we add a third-party service — analytics, a payment provider, a booking engine — that provider may set its own cookies under its own policy. We choose providers whose terms are appropriate under the data protection law that applies to us.

Entry to The Green Room is restricted to people aged 18 and over on production of valid government photo identification, checked at every visit, and any higher age or additional rules set by local law apply as well. We may refuse entry to the gaming floor, or to any part of the hotel, to anyone who cannot establish age or identity to our satisfaction.
3. Reservations
Reservations made through this website or the reservations desk are subject to availability at the moment of confirmation. Most categories need a valid payment card to hold. Cancellation, deposit and no-show terms vary by rate and season and are disclosed before you confirm. Rates exclude local tourist tax unless we say otherwise.
4. Surfing, lessons and equipment
Surfing carries an inherent risk of injury and death. All guests using our boards, lessons, guiding or boat trips must sign a waiver and declare relevant medical conditions and swimming ability honestly. Our guides have the final word on whether a session runs and on which break any individual may use, and their decision is not appealable. South Reef may not be surfed without a guide under any circumstances. Rental equipment must be returned in the condition it left; damage beyond ordinary wear is charged at cost. We are not responsible for personal equipment left in the racks, which are provided as a convenience and are not a bailment.
5. Conduct at the hotel
All play is subject to the house rules posted at each table and machine and to the rules and limits set by our regulator. We may bar anyone from the gaming floor, or ask them to leave the property, for conduct that disturbs other guests, breaches house rules, or gives reasonable grounds to suspect cheating or collusion. We may also refuse service where someone appears intoxicated, and our staff will refuse a water session on the same basis.
6. Use of this website
This site exists to inform prospective guests and help them reach us. You agree not to submit false information, not to attempt unauthorised access to our systems, and not to reproduce substantial parts of the content without written permission.

To the extent the law permits, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of this website or your stay, and we are not liable for gambling losses. Nothing here excludes any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
